I have been using the same yard rake for 30-plus years.

It’s plastic, so it doesn’t rust. It’s sturdy and, aside from the flaking paint on the handle giving me an occasional splinter, it has served me well all this time … or so I thought.

Recently, during my weekly ritual, I took a closer look at it only to discover that the tines (the little “fingers” that do the actual work) had gradually worn down over the years.

There was no dramatic failure to catch my attention. It didn’t break or suddenly stop working. (It’s a rake, after all.) It just became a little less effective every season while I subconsciously adapted. Without even realizing it, I was having to rake harder and make more passes over the same area to get the job done.

It got me thinking that it’s surprisingly easy to allow the same thing to happen with your brand.

You create your logo and identity. Maybe even put together a nice brand standards guide. You do your research, write your messaging, and build a website.

Then you check the box and get back to running your business.

The phone is still ringing, and the business is still growing, so the brand must be doing its job. Seems logical, right?

Right?

Well, maybe.

Or maybe not.

When was the last time you really evaluated your brand’s performance? I’m not referring to asking yourself if you still like your logo. (The brand is so much more than that.) I mean objectively stepping outside of the bubble we all get trapped in and asking yourself if your brand is actually working as hard for you today as it did when you launched it. Is it still occupying the right space in the minds of others?

A lot has changed over the years. Your competitors have gotten smarter. Their websites are better. Their messaging is more focused. They’ve gotten better at telling their story and making themselves look like the obvious choice.

Meanwhile, you’ve been coasting.

And now, for better or worse, with AI in the mix, it’s quicker and easier to produce marketing assets. But it also makes it quicker and easier to produce marketing that looks and sounds like everybody else. I call it “saminess.” Most call it “slop.”

Consumers are more skeptical than ever. They’ve become pretty good at spotting the difference between a company that actually has something genuine to say and one that is going through the motions with what they’re supposed to say. They’re not even noticing the ones that are blending in.

That makes having a brand much different than having one that still works by evolving with its market.

Like my yard rake, your brand may not be broken. It may have simply become worn over the years. And like that worn rake, you can compensate for a worn brand for quite a long time without even realizing that you’re working harder just to maintain the status quo. The money you spend on advertising, the content you create, the selling … they are incrementally becoming less effective.

Harder, faster, and more raking won’t make up for what’s been lost.

Sometimes, the smarter move is to put down the rake, take a good look at the tines, and ask yourself some tough questions.

Is your brand still communicating what makes your business unique? Does it reflect the market you’re in today? Does it clearly distinguish you from your competitors? Does it give people a reason to want to learn more and maybe even pay a premium for what you offer?

Maybe it’s doing just fine. Perhaps it just needs a little sharpening. Or maybe it’s worn down more than you realize.

The average garden rake isn’t designed to last forever.

But an exceptional brand can, as long as you disable the autopilot and treat it like a living, breathing document.

Every once in a while, you have to step back, take a look, and ask yourself a simple question:

“Is my brand still working as hard as I am?”

Often that takes the objectivity of an outsider who is not emotionally invested to poke a few holes and help bring some clarity.

Don’t allow your brand to get worn out like just another tool in your shed.
